Today, on World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, we unite to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Desertification and drought are not just environmental issues but threats to food security, livelihoods, and the well-being of millions around the globe. As we reflect on this day, it is crucial to recognize the significance of sustainable land management and the role innovative solutions play in combating these challenges.
Desertification, land degradation, and drought are impacting nearly half of the world’s population, with up to 40% of the planet’s land already degraded. Every second, an equivalent of four football fields of healthy land is lost, adding up to a total of 100 million hectares each year (UNCCD) (UNCCD). This degradation affects agricultural productivity, leading to food insecurity and increased poverty, especially in developing countries.
At Farmerline, we are deeply committed to empowering smallholder farmers and communities to create climate-resilient landscapes. Our work through Mergdata, a comprehensive digital solution, enables farmers to access vital information, resources, and tools to improve their farming practices and adapt to changing climatic conditions. Mergdata’s capabilities include real-time data collection, farm mapping, and providing actionable insights that help farmers make informed decisions. By leveraging technology, we bridge the gap between farmers and the knowledge they need to thrive in an ever-changing environment.
Our dedication to climate resilience is further exemplified through our collaboration with Mission 13. This initiative focuses on creating sustainable agricultural systems that contribute to global climate objectives. Through Mission 13, we aim to reduce carbon footprints, promote regenerative agriculture, and enhance biodiversity. Our integrated approach ensures that farmers are not only equipped to combat desertification and drought but also contribute to the broader goal of climate sustainability.
The effects of desertification and drought extend beyond environmental damage. These phenomena are major drivers of forced migration, putting tens of millions of people at risk of displacement each year. The frequency and severity of drought events have increased by 29% since 2000, threatening ecosystems and human livelihoods (UNCCD) (UNCCD). With nearly 95% of our food dependent on healthy land, the degradation of these resources poses a severe risk to food security globally (UNCCD) (UN Sustainable Development Goals).
On this World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, we invite you to join us in our mission. Let us work together to protect our land, secure our legacy, and build a sustainable future for generations to come. By raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and taking action, we can create a resilient and thriving agricultural landscape that supports people and the planet.
